What Is a Faja and Why Is It Used After Plastic Surgery?

A faja is a compression garment commonly worn after procedures such as liposuction, Lipo 360, tummy tuck, BBL and other body-contouring surgeries.

Unlike regular shapewear, post-operative fajas are designed to provide structured support around treated areas while the body heals.

Why Are Fajas Used After Surgery?

After plastic surgery, swelling and tenderness are normal parts of recovery. A properly fitted compression garment may help:

  • Support swollen and healing tissues

  • Manage post-operative swelling

  • Provide a secure, supported feeling during movement

  • Maintain more consistent compression around treated areas

  • Support the body as swelling decreases and contours become more visible

Compression should feel snug and supportive—not painfully tight. More compression does not necessarily mean better compression.

Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 Fajas

Fajas are often described by recovery stage

Stage 1 garments are generally designed for earlier recovery when swelling may be higher.

Stage 2 garments are typically more structured and may be introduced as swelling decreases.

Stage 3 garments are commonly used later in recovery or for everyday shaping and compression.

Not everyone needs every stage, and timing should always follow your surgeon's recommendations.

Choosing the Right Faja

The right garment depends on your:

  • Surgery

  • Areas treated

  • Recovery stage

  • Measurements

  • Torso and leg length

  • Desired compression level

  • Surgeon’s instructions

A garment that works well after abdominal liposuction may not be appropriate after a BBL, breast procedure or thigh surgery.
